Blessing

9 January 2006
"It was sure a long day. We had little success today, but I am in a better mood this evening then this morning. I have got really tense as of late for some reason, and the last little while I have tried to relax. Today it went well, but a couple of times I almost lost it. I got an awesome article from the office about receiving referrals and it talks a lot about gaining the trust of members. It was exactly what I was fasting for.

The day started out decent for us as we went contacting and met several good people and were able to talk with them, and got a couple of phone numbers. We came home and got stuff ready for lunch before we had собрание округа. We ran off to help Маша и Аня and then we wanted to meet with Афина but she wasn't home again. We went to see Шавкат and he is well. The home where they are living is very small, and very unkempt. I wish that we could help them somehow but they need to grow and learn. We came home, and this evening we made пельмены and so that was good. Back to work we got and hopefully all will go well!"

Fasting

8 January 2006
"I thought I would die from hunger today. We didn't eat for 3 more hours then we planned and I walked around like a zombie. After the meeting today, we went right with Илья to see some members and congratulate them with the holidays that we just had. We ended up buying stuff today on the Sabbath because Илья thought that it was necessary. We thought otherwise, but we went and bought some cake, and gave it to several members. We stopped by to one lady in the hospital and sang with her some hymns, and had a sweet time. It felt cool be in the hospital and sing off to the side. None of our investigators came to the meeting and that was too bad. Everyone said that I didn't look so good today and asked why.

I think one of the main reasons is because I have been thinking a ton lately. I have thought a lot about how to help the missionaries that are here, and see how I can bless their missions. I fasted for them this morning and came to the conclusion that we need to focus more on our goal as being a missionary. I will talk with them about not giving into the smallest temptation, and about how that is the start. President Макаров talked about that this morning and I thought it was perfect for me. I love fasting and the blessings that come from it!"

Christmas

7 January 2006
"Today was alright other than the fact that I feel as though I am dying. My desire to work seems to be falling off a bit. Today I was absolutely tired, and had a lot on my mind. I have thought a lot about being a zone leader, and how I would rather not do it. Just worrying about not only about myself, but about other missionaries also, and their future. I am holding my fast right now in behalf of them and to know how to help them. So, today we contacted a little bit this morning before we headed to the Christmas concert - I forgot that today is Christmas in Russia. We went to watch that, and had a wonderful time there. I was a bit tired, but it was cool. We then came home and ate chili and fried tortillas. It was really good.

I took a quick nap and then we headed off to one member where we read the Christmas story. We walked to Афина's place, and we had a really good time finding her not home. Маша и Аня were with us, but we got rid of them, and we came home to do some planning. We planned our next week and things should go well too."

Work Harder

6 January 2006
"We are back in Penza after a great conference in Saratov. We had a way awesome time there learning about all of the different qualities of Jesus Christ which we want to have in ourselves. Elder Steiner and I taught милосердие и усердие (charity and diligence). It was cool to be up in front of everyone and to teach them. The missionaries right now seem to be less worried about the work than earlier. They don't speak in Russian hardly ever although I try to always speak it - its a mission rule. The mission has changed a lot since I came, and the missionaries seem less focused. Maybe it is just because they are so young.

For lunch we had pizza from Papa John's which is always a booster. We enjoyed all of conference, and then we stayed after for interviews. President said to me that to fix problems we need to read Preach My Gospel more, and the white hand book. He said also that a church building here in Penza depends more on the faith then on the numbers. President is a very inspired man, and I am grateful to be serving under him. On the way home, we talked a little about getting our calling on a mission. I remember how happy I was, and touched by the spirit when I opened my call. I had one month to prepare to serve the Lord. What an amazing things to have opened that calling, and to now be here on my mission. The lord knows us and our needs."

Memories

5 January 2006
"I am back in Dachney today. It is sure awesome I love this area, and didn't realize how much I miss the people here. This was a huge growing experience for me. I had a ton of memories come flowing back. We left for Saratov this morning on a gazelles and went and played in the park. We actually went and played with some Russians in soccer, and I was playing goalie but got owned by them (we did end up winning). After a couple of hours, we took off.

So, on the way home we got a taxi, and he took some back route home. We were flying down this road and there were only two little tire tracks and the rest was ice. We did have one really close one where we almost spun out. It was sweet. We got changed and ready to go and then we headed off to get Шарума's. That was way sweet, and I love those. We then checked out some movies and discs before hitting up a tie store. There, I bought 7 ties and it was fun. We headed out to заводской where we saw the end of The Chronicles of Narnia, and then we did some skits. We did a gum eating where I started chewing a piece and then everyone touched, stepped, and sat one it before I ate it again. It was pretty sweet, and funny. On the way home, there were some little Russians who thought they were funny so made fun of us in Russia. We understood it all, and acted like nothing. We then answered a bunch of their questions in Russian, and they felt really stupid. Like I said - there are awesome memories here in this area!"

Banya

4 January 2006
"This morning we slept in and then we went and payed for the branch apartment. We cleaned up there a bit before we decided to go buy some food on the рынок.We got stuff really really cheap and we got a bunch of it too. We stopped by home before we decided to head over to write home. That went pretty well, and things are going well at home. They brought in the New Year and things are cool that way. We then went to chill in the Баня. That is like a sauna but it is super popular. So, we went and chilled there. It was way sweet. There was one room that was so hot. You threw water on these rocks, and then it got hotter. You were then suppose to get in this pool type thing...

We were there for like an hour and a half, and it was sweet. We then went and watched Elf for English lesson, and that was cool. I have a ton to do tonight."

Another Good One

3 January 2006
"Today was a quick one, and we were super busy. We ran all over the place, and had a ton of meetings. We started the day out by meeting with a member named Дима. He is 20 and hasn't been to church in 3 years. He has been to America twice, and it is cool to talk with him. He is such a cool guy, and we want to help him become active again. We ran to see Раиса next, and she is doing fairly well other than the fact that she is sick and she feels like she can't do anything. She is cool, just needs to find more faith in herself. She said something interesting - "We will just wait until the time comes." I thought a bit about it, and wish I could help her understand that we can't wait, but need to act now.

We came home, and had some bean burritos - we made refried beans. That is dangerous of course - after effects, but tasty. We stopped by to Максим in the hospital, and then we met up with Аня Фил. to go to another meeting. She is cool, and is a good help to us. We ended the night with at the Старостины's. They always ask a ton of questions about America and what things are like there. It is fun to answer their questions and I enjoy it. We have a ton to do tonight, and tomorrow is p-day - time sure does fly."
